Last month, Nym announced the free and public beta version of NymVPN, which now grants anyone access to try out and help us improve the world’s most private VPN service. Want to be a contributing part of the revolution of privacy technology? It’s just one click away!
NymVPN is close to achieving another critical goal to meet all privacy needs: supercharging its Fast Mode with the WireGuard protocol. In internal testing, it is showing speeds upwards of 150 MBps and latencies below 50 ms. WireGuard will be officially live for NymVPN in the coming weeks.
There are also new entry and exit countries, app translations, and more! So here’s a breakdown of everything that happened last month.
Welcome to all Beta testers!
In August, NymVPN officially entered its free public beta testing phase. With NymVPN’s apps and network stabilizing, it was time to make the app available to a wider audience. There is no longer any waitlist, and anyone can sign up to test NymVPN today! Simply head to nymvpn.com/en and sign up to get an instant credential.
Nym has already received valuable feedback from new beta testers, so thank you to everyone who has already signed up and sent packets through the mixnet! Nym is looking forward to continuing a tight knit collaboration with the community as the product and network develop.
General update
In August, we focused on improving NymVPN in three ways:
- Significantly improving connection quality by increasing speed, reducing latency, and making the experience more reliable
- Enhancing the reliability and clarity of user experience
- Laying the groundwork for the upcoming commercial launch which will permit anonymous payments from both fiat and crypto currencies
Apps update
WireGuard internal testing
NymVPN provides unparalleled privacy through its Anonymous Mode which routes user traffic through the Nym mixnet. This includes advanced features like 5-hops, layered-encryption, cover traffic, and added network noise.
But for everyday tasks like browsing or streaming, the streamlined Fast Mode with 2-hops is the ideal choice.
In August, the team began internally testing the WireGuard protocol to significantly enhance NymVPN’s Fast Mode, which is a robust 2-hop tunnel-in-a-tunnel setup. Early tests have shown speeds exceeding 150 Mbps and latencies under 50 ms. Nym is very excited to roll out this update soon for all apps and platforms!
New Debian install instructions
We’ve simplified our Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian install instructions. Check them out here.
German, Hindi, and Japanese localization
The Nym community is actively localizing the NymVPN experience into multiple languages, expanding the app’s reach into new countries and among less technical audiences. In August, the translation of NymVPN expanded into German, Hindi, and Japanese. If you want to help contribute to the project, get started here.
The localized versions are now live on our Android, Linux, and Windows apps. Localization for our iOS/macOS apps and website is coming soon.

Network update: New Cyprus, Romania, and South Korea nodes
Thanks to our thriving community, we added new locations for NymVPN nodes:
- Entry gateways are now available in Cyprus, Romania, and South Korea. Note: Hungary, however, is temporarily unavailable.
- Exit gateways are now available in Cyprus and Vietnam. Note: Turkey is also temporarily unavailable.
If you’d like NymVPN to offer entry or exit gateways in additional locations valuable to you, please get in touch! Or learn how to set up a node yourself and contribute to the growing online privacy revolution. You can even gain rewards for your work through the Nym Delegations Program.
Technical update: zk-nyms testing
Our Dev team is testing zk-nym (zero-knowledge proof-based) access credentials. Stay tuned for an upcoming release that will decouple your account data from your online activity.
