Year of the Fire Horse

Legend has it, a fire horse emerged once from a lake to torment local villagers. But the people mobilized together. Led by an army of children with fireworks, their collective noise succeeded in scaring the menace back into the water.

A similar beast threatens a free, private, and open internet today. Surveillance and censorship are the two heads of this hydra. While one casts its net over us all, the second is blocking billions of people from accessing global information and communications.

Like the children of the village, NymVPN provides a new kind of arsenal to fight back: a network where we become more anonymous and protected together by making enough noise so surveillance can’t find our signals, and where censorship can’t enclose our connections.

But online privacy requires unimpeded internet access. And for those living under highly restricted environments, the walls of censorship must first be scaled or tunneled under.

When you use NymVPN, it should ideally always work and give you access to free and uncensored internet. Here’s what Nym has done in the past year to build a censorship-circumventing toolkit, and how we’re taking things to the next level in 2026.

2025 laid the foundations of resilient privacy

Over the past year, we focused on making the Nym network and NymVPN faster, harder to block, and ready for the next generation of cryptographic threats. The objective was simple: strengthen every layer, performance, transport, infrastructure, and cryptography so people in censored environments can connect more reliably and safely.

Stage 1: AmneziaWG

In early 2025, censorship resistance with NymVPN became fully cross-platform with AmneziaWG integrated as the default protocol for the Fast Mode. This ensures that users across all operating systems benefit from a high-performance tunnel optimized for speed without sacrificing privacy. Essentially, AmneziaWG adds random noise to the initial WireGuard connection, defeating unsophisticated censors not using AI to detect VPN connections.

Stage 2: QUIC

Later in the year, QUIC became available across all platforms as a pluggable transport for the Fast Mode. By aligning traffic patterns more closely with modern internet standards, QUIC significantly improves resistance to traffic discrimination by making VPN traffic look like normal web traffic. Users in restrictive networks now have a much better chance of connecting, even where traditional VPN traffic is aggressively throttled or blocked.

Stage 3: Stealth API

Behind the scenes, we hardened our APIs and service endpoints to withstand filtering and targeted disruption. By redesigning how connections are shielded and routed, we reduced the effectiveness of common interference techniques. The result is more reliable access in heavily censored regions, with fewer failed attempts and less manual troubleshooting.

Stage 4: Cryptography

At the cryptographic layer, 2025 marked a major milestone. We published peer-reviewed research introducing Outfox, an improved successor to the Sphinx packet format with built-in post-quantum security. Outfox reduces performance overhead while preparing the mixnet for the cryptographic realities of the coming decades.

In parallel, we advanced work on integrating post-quantum protections across the Nym ecosystem to ensure long-term privacy resilience. This work was coded, but now needs more testing and integration to deploy.

2025 in summary

By the end of 2025, Nym delivered:

  • Faster, more reliable cross-platform performance in censored regions
  • Greater transport diversity and resistance to traffic discrimination via deploying AmneziaWG by default and then enabling QUIC support.
  • Hardened infrastructure under adversarial conditions via Stealth API
  • A concrete design for post-quantum security

And with these foundations in place, we are ready to take things to the next level.

Nym’s 2026 plan to fight censorship

Countries, from the Middle East to even the EU, are trying to stop the usage of VPNs, and decentralized VPNs in combination with advanced censorship resistance technologies are the only real solution.

After strengthening performance, transport diversity, and cryptographic foundations in 2025, our focus shifts to something equally critical in 2026: Making anti-censorship infrastructure dynamically responsive.

Censorship does not stand still, and neither can we. Static defenses like QUIC and AmneziaWG are now being attacked with censorship that can adapt in near real time using AI.

As seen by recent internet shutdowns, many countries are being more brutal than ever in cutting internet access to their population via increasingly dramatic means, using centralized chokepoints like the domain name system to block their access.

In 2026, we are introducing a centralized configuration control plane, resilient bootstrapping mechanisms, and context-aware delivery systems that allow the Nym anti-censorship team to respond faster, more precisely, and with measurable feedback to censorship.

At the user level, this will mean fewer failed attempts, less waiting, and more reliable access in censored regions. At the infrastructure level, it means measurable, iterative resistance. In 2026, we are building an adaptive anti-censorship system that evolves continuously, without friction, without downtime, and without waiting for the next app update.

2026 roadmap: From reinforcement to adaptation

Resilience: High-availability bootstrapping under adversarial conditions

We should assume there is censorship the moment the user turns on their computer. In other words, access to NymVPN must not depend on already having uncensored internet access. We are thus investing in lightweight and censorship-resistant bootstrapping mechanisms that allow clients to discover updated environment and configuration data even when access to APIs are filtered or throttled.

This includes:

  • Resilient initial discovery flows
  • Support for alternative retrieval paths for configuration information, including leveraging blockchain technology.
  • Improved connection state logic within clients
  • Reduced dependency on fragile first-contact endpoints and validators
  • Rapid and flexible censorship incident response

The goal is simple: even when parts of the network are disrupted, users can still obtain the information they need to connect successfully.

Speed: Tailored & context-aware delivery

Right now, users have to discover manually what NymVPN nodes work for them. A one-size-fits-all configuration does not work in a fragmented internet, and the user interface should assist the user in getting working connections. So in 2026, we are enabling context-aware configuration delivery, allowing infrastructure to serve different configurations based on:

  • Network conditions
  • Region or ASN characteristics
  • Nightly features and cutting-edge rollout groups
  • Transport performance metrics

Operational observability & feedback loops

Adaptability requires visibility. We are expanding metrics and monitoring capabilities tied to configuration versions and delivery paths. This enables:

  • Faster detection of censorship via continuous monitoring
  • Measurement of evasion effectiveness
  • Data-driven iteration of ways to defeat censorship
  • Safe experimentation with rollback capability

With this, censorship resistance will be measurable, not anecdotal.

Expanded censorship resilience

Continuing and improving upon the work from last year we want to expand pluggable transport integrations. As new censorship incidents happen our most important tool is the ability to adapt to the network. This will include:

  • Multiple additional transports available to clients, in the style of v2ray
  • More flexibility in transport configuration
