You spoke, the Nym Core team listened. Nym is introducing a dedicated community grants programme focused on global community growth and ecosystem scalability.

Over the past years, the Nym community has operated the core infrastructure of the mixnet, contributed valuable tooling such as the explorers by Nodes Guru, as well as built apps and integrations like Pastenym by No Trust Verify (see awesome-nym for more).

The Nym community has enjoyed explosive growth since the first Shipyard Academy and there are now thousands of new joiners. Nym core team has conducted polls and interviews with active community members, and it’s clear the Nym community bristles with potential.

With all this new talent flowing into the channels, it’s time to unlock this potential by empowering community contributions with the Nym Community Grants Programme.

Whether you are a hacktivist, educator, community organiser or creator, whether you are an individual or part of a DAO, these grants are here to support and inspire Nymsters to contribute more actively in building the Nym ecosystem.

Who can apply for Nym Community Grants?

Individuals who possess the necessary qualifications for the grant are welcome to apply.

Prior experience within the Nym community is highly recommended but not necessary to be considered for grants. Note that Nym aims to support individuals or organisations that share the mission of privacy from any part of the world.

Community grants applicant criteria

Applicants should already have a strong understanding of Nym’s vision, products, and the latest developments.
Experience in marketing, community building, content creation, design, and/or coding.
Applicants must be passionate about privacy and believe in the Nym mission.
Applicants should be proactive self-starters, quick learners, and have strong communication skills.

RFPs and impact areas

During the initial programme batches, Nym will introduce specific Request for Proposals (RFPs) which community members will be encouraged to participate in to be prioritised for funding.

Additionally, grantees will be requested to prioritise content creation through “Open Grants,” particularly in enhancing documentation and contributing to the development of Shipyard Academy.

Nym is especially looking for contributions around:

Documentation

Creating educational materials and resources specifically tailored to the Nym community, covering various aspects of Nym technology, use cases, and best practices. Developing tutorials, guides, or workshops to educate community members on how to maximise the benefits of Nym.

Community engagement

Initiating, designing, and running activities and programmes to foster a sense of community among Nym users, developers, and other stakeholders. Examples could include organising meet-ups, conferences, or virtual events to facilitate networking, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration within the community.

Community outreach

Encouraging collaboration and partnerships between the Nym community and other projects, organisations, or communities that align with the values and goals of Nym. Exploring opportunities for joint initiatives, project integrations, or co-development.

Community grants rollout phases

Soft launch, Jul 2023 — the test phase for active conversations with Nymsters, including: the first grant giveaways, engaging with active community members, public sharing of deliverables, projects and ideas screening, and building a feedback loop for clear communication between the community and the Nym core team.
Complete programme launch, Oct 2023 — co-created with the Nym community from the decision-making process to screening and voting mechanisms. Plus additional grants distribution, updates to the community member grant journey, sharing best practices around community contribution, and setting out clear expectations and evaluation criteria.

Who is eligible to apply?

Any individual or team with the appropriate qualifications and aligning values is encouraged to apply.

Can applicants submit multiple applications?

No. Only one application per applicant is allowed at any time. Submitting more than one application will result in rejection.

Are there any preferences for grant tracks, regions, or impact areas?

While Request for Proposals (RFPs) will be prioritised, all other “Open Applications” will be treated equally regardless of their track, region, or impact area.

Is prior involvement in the Nym community required to apply for this grant?

Prior experience with the Nym community is highly recommended but not necessary. However, Nym aims to support individuals or organisations that align with Nym’s privacy mission.

What criteria will the judging panel consider during the application screening process?

In particular Nym will evaluate:

The project’s contribution to the Nym ecosystem.
A well-structured and justified breakdown of the grant budget.
The experience of the team involved.
Clear milestone descriptions and deliverables.

Can I submit my application in a language other than English?

Yes, you can apply in your preferred language. However, during the review process, you may need to arrange for a translator if one is unavailable within the Nym core team. Please note that this additional step may extend processing time.

I haven’t received an update on my application for several weeks. What should I do?

Typically, Nym responds promptly. If you haven’t received an update for an extended period, this may be due to a technical issue. In such cases please contact a Community Manager (CM) via the general community or through social media channels to inquire about the status of your application.
