A look back at the masterclasses and discussions of Nym Shipyard Level 1.

Nym Shipyard opening ceremony
Nym Head of Community, Sudo, and community OG Huxian of Pineapple Hive welcomed thousands of participants to kickstart Nym Shipyard.
Jaya Klara Brekke, Chief Strategy Officer at Nym, gave a big-picture overview of why privacy has become so pressing in recent decades:
“Privacy as a word doesn’t even exist in all languages,” she said. “That’s because human beings were used to having privacy as the default for thousands of years — our interior thoughts and emotions were our own. This is no longer the case.”
Instead of privacy as the default, we now live in an age of surveillance as the default.
What are the impacts of the surveillance-by-default system? Marginalisation, a chilling effect on society where discussion is not free and open, and where digital targeting leads to mental health crises, misinformation, violence and repression.

Fixing the broken internet: Nym CEO Harry Halpin
Nym CEO Harry Halpin gave a masterclass on a core problem of the internet as it is today: that the network layer is entirely exposed.
This means traffic patterns are visible, revealing who is talking to whom and much, much more. Harry explained how mixnets solve this problem, and how Nym is combining its mixnet with blockchain technology to solve not just the technical but also the economic problems of mass surveillance.
He also introduced zk-nyms, the anonymous credentials used for accessing the Nym mixnet and the upcoming VPN for totally private payments.
Watch the full video to hear all about the history of mixnets, zk-nyms, the new privacy paradigm and the next era of innovation it could enable:

Metadata, just how much does it reveal about us? Nym Chief Scientist Claudia Diaz
Nym Chief Scientist Claudia Diaz gave a masterclass on metadata, what it is and how it can reveal far more about us, our habits, finances and social relationships than even the actual contents of data. Metadata is the information about a message: the size, timing, location and frequency of communications flowing between people. Because this is the language of machines, this data can be fed into machine learning algorithms to deanonymise senders and recipients of data, and learn all sorts of things about them.
Watch the full video to hear exactly how metadata can be used to deanonymise people and even decipher encrypted messages — and what can be done about it:

Nym, the private transport layer for Web3
Nym Developer Relations Alexia Lorenza Martinel and Business Development lead Ade Molajo gave the fourth and final talk of Level 1 on privacy in Web3. Alexia explained how a lack of privacy is making DeFi, NFTs and infrastructure insecure and leaky, while Ade offered insights into Nym partnerships and the ways that privacy can be enabled to realise the full promise of Web3: self-sovereignty, ownership and user control.

Fireside chat: Privacy primitives in Web3
This fireside chat featuring members of the Universal Privacy Alliance discusses the new privacy primitives shaping the Web3 space. Special guests Kenny Li (Manta) and Alan Scott of (Railgun) join Jaya and Sudo to talk about the potential of privacy for unleashing a new wave of innovation that benefits, rather than controls, ordinary people.
